Rib removal is a rarely performed surgery. The procedure involves removing one or two ribs from each side. The human body has 13 pairs of ribs, some of us have 12. The first 7 ribs are named true ribs because they are connected to our breastbone and sternum. The remaining 5/6 are named false ribs, three sets out of these attached to a cartilaginous tissue. The remaining two sets of these false ribs are known as “floating ribs” as they are not attached to any tissue at front but only to the vertebrae at the back. The role of the ribcage is to protect the lungs, heart and other internal organs of the thorax. Despite this, ribremoval surgery may be performed for various reasons.
